Kick the SOCCKET for Light!

The SOCCKET
Energy cannot be destroyed, it can only be transferred. That was what I learned from my science classes back in school. Hence it is possible to convert kinetic energy into electrical energy. This knowledge is not new, but how a team of scientists applied this knowledge has given new meaning to 'the power of  play'.

As you might have guessed, the SOCCKET generates electricity whenever it is moved.  Unlike the dynamo on a bicycle, the SOCCKET has a pendulum inside it which swings and converts kinetic energy into electrical energy which is then stored in a rechargeable battery. Like a dynamo, it powers a light source - an LED in particular - when connected to the charger. It is estimated to be able to generate 3-hours of light from 30-minutes of play.

There is no need to worry about fragility. After all, it was designed to function like a regular soccer ball. It is actually more durable than the conventional soccer ball, in that it will not deflate, as it is made of a specialised foam.

The inventors, Jessica O. Matthews and Julia Silverman, founded a social enterprise called Uncharted Play in 2011, which mass produces the SOCKKET. However, the initial patent for the invention is held by Matthews and Silverman, along with Jessica Lin, Hemali Thakkar and Aviva Presser, who are alumni of Harvard University. The project has almost raised $100,000 on Kickstarter, a fundraiser.

I first came across the SOCCKET a few months ago when my Dad showed me a commercial for it on Youtube. I hope the SOCCKET becomes a more readily available especially in countries and places where children and people in general are poverty-stricken, or have limited access to electricity.

Scientists Echo the Gecko Feet

The gecko feet have gripped scientists - and countless surfaces with ease - for a long time and is one of the animals scientists are trying to mimic. I hope you like lizards!

The invention in mind is the Geckskin. Named as one of the top scientific breakthroughs of 2012 by CNN Money, it is a truly gripping piece of biomimetic innovation. (Biomimetic, biomimicry or bionics means mimicking nature to design and engineer new man-made materials. Put another way, Geckskin is a biologically inspired design.)

The team behind this innovation is from the University of Massachusetts (UMass) Amherst. The team comprises Al Crosby, Dan King, Michael Bratlett and Duncan Irschick. The interdisciplinary team was not the first of scientists to develop adhesives from mimicking gecko footpads. What makes Geckskin different from other innovations is that it tries to mimic a different structure under the gecko feet, particularly the tendons. As explained by UMass researcher Al Crosby, the tendons are directly connected to the skin and hairs (called setae) on the gecko's footpad. The product is a sheet of adhesiv covered in these structures.

The Geckskin successfully emulates the gecko's feet. A sheet of gecksking the size of an idex card can hold up to 700 pounds and can be removed with minimal effort. What makes it even more practicable is that it is reusable and does not leave any residue behind when peeled off. I especially like the last listed feature, because I find adhesives such as cellophane tape a pain sometimes.

The reason why it was listed as the top 5 breakthroughs by CNN Money is because it is seen as extremely marketable. The research was also partially endorsed by US Defense Research Projestcs Agency. So there is a lot of potential for the Geckskin in application in all sorts of areas.

I'm guessing that the Geckskin might be used in outer space where super strong adhesives are needed to hold parts together - you wouldn't want vital pieces of equipment floating aimlessly around in space. Also, maybe in heavy industries and movie productions. It would definitely aide Tom Cruise's character in Mission Impossible, Ethan Hunt, on missions where climbing buildings is involved. Households consumers like us might even find use in this. We might need smaller versions that can be used to hold TVs up, maybe even to stick vases to the table - especially in households with hyperactive children running around. The additional helpful feature is that it won't leave a mark on your expensive crystal-ware.

Anybody up for making a Gecko-man? He could become Spiderman's buddy.

Fabulous Fabiola

To some of you, the name might ring a bell, while to others, it's just anther play on words. To those who have been following updates and advances on arguably the most exciting scientific discovery of the decade, the first name in the title belongs to a woman, Fabiola Gianotti, whom as you'll find out, is no ordinary person.

The spectacular scientific discovery in mind is the discovery of a Higgs Boson - like particle. The Higgs Boson a.k.a God particle is named after the British physicist, Peter Higgs, who first proposed the 'Higgs Theory'. In mid 2012, a particle that has very similar properties with the Higgs particle was discovered in a collider at CERN. By the way, CERN stands for Conseil Europeen pour la Recherche Nucleaire, or European Council for Nuclear Research.

So where does Fabiola Gianotti come in? Well, she played an important role leading up to the discovery of the Higgs-like particle. She headed the ATLAS experiment - consisting of 3000 scientists from 37 countries - at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN where the discovery was made. The ATLAS experiment was one of two experiments that were searching for signs of the Higgs Boson. In light of this, she was voted the runner-up person of the year 2012 in Time magazine.

Born to a geologist, Fabiola Gianotti is an Italian particle physicist by profession and was a physics coordinator at ATLAS from 1999 to 2003. After working at CERN for 18 years, she was elected to become spokesperson and coordinator of the ATLAS experiment. Surprisingly, Fabiola Gianotti's early education had little to do with physics. Her secondary education focused primarily on ancient languages, art history and literature.

Only during university did she opt to study physics. Having studied philosophy as a teenager, she says the two fields are very much alike as they both pondered on the very basic questions. Growing up, she had always been a very curious person and loved nature at the same time. So it seemed right that she pursued a filed which requires the hunger to know and understand all things around us.

Besides being a leading physicist, she also holds a professional music diploma in piano from the Milan Conservatory. Being well-immersed in both the arts and science, Gianotti thinks that art and physics are not so very different because, as she is quoted saying, 'art is based on very clear, mathematical principles like proportion and harmony. At the same time, physicists need to be inventive, to have ideas, to have some fantasy.'

That is something I agree on. I think art and science are very much related, except that the former is more abstract while the latter is more concrete and quantifiable. This has lead most of to think that art  or the arts is all about emotions, aesthetics, culture and creativity while science is often viewed as mathematical, absolute, and 'dead' even. Both fields are immensely broad, and intercept every now and then. Take architecture for example, it is considered a visual art yet employs mathematics and physics to design.

It is also interesting to note that female scientists only make up about 30% of the research scientist in Europe and a quarter in the US. That means it is more statistically unlikely for a woman to excel in a science career. Eventhough reports have shown that underachievement by girls in mathematics has narrowed drastically and is non-existent in some countries, girls typically lose interest in science very early on in secondary school and few want to pursue a science career. Some girls still believe they are not as good as boys in mathematics. However, Gianotti has proven that with passion and the right attitude, you can achieve just about anything. 

That should leave you with something to think about. For now, a round of applause for Fabiola Gianotti for her contributions in science and art, and for being curious.

What are Regional Currencies? (Part 2)

That is not to say the residents of the respective regions took in the new currencies with open arms. As it is with human nature, the residents were weary at first, reluctant to participate but after 8 years, as in the case of the Chiemgauer, things took off. The Chiemgauer in its fledgling year had a dismal turnover of €75,000, but by 2011, its turnover increased to 6 200 000. Now over 600 businesses in the region accept the currency and according to reports, the residents are happy with it. After all, 1 Chiemgauer is exchangeable for 1 euro, so I guess the residents don't lose out at all.With the Berkshare, it is another success story. Last year, over 400 businesses accepted the Berkshare. In just 30 months from its launch, about 2.2 Berkshares were issued.

Regional currencies are introduced for several reasons - although the Chiemgauer did start out as a school project, it has brought benefits to the region's people and economy. Similarly, the Berkshares have gain immense attention from non-users as the financial cirsis hit the Western world in 2008. It seems that with the Berkshare, the Berkshire economy was able to stay relatively intact and stable, although the Berkshare is still backed by the US dollar, the local currency still succeeds in retaining wealth within the community. 

However, there are downsides as well, the BerkShare, being backed by the US dollar, is still vulnerable to volatility in the US economy in general. The Chiemgauer does present a catch, if the note is not used within 3 months, its value depreciates and renewing the expired requires the holder to pay a sort of penalty.

I think having regional currencies is a good idea if the people in the community are willing to participate and support it fully. Otherwise, it would be hassle trying to pay for some goods at a local shop. The regional currency, of course, has many limitations, such as not being accepted outside of the specific region. I wonder, if any regional currency ever got to a stage of being so influential that it could match even a quarter, or even one tenth, of the country's currency turnover or profit, would it be a significant threat to the country's currency?

What are Regional Currencies? (Part 1)

On September 19th 2012,  the latest city in the UK to have its own regional currency is the city of Bristol. It is known as the Bristol Pound (£B) and it comes in four denominations: 1, 5, 10 and 20. Good news for the residents of Bristol, because one Bristol Pound is exactly exchangeable for one pound sterling. The Bristol Pound denominations are complete with designs submitted by those in the community.

There are many synonyms for 'regional currency', including local currency, community currency and alternative currencies, though they do not necessarily have the exact same meaning. We will focus on local currency and regional currency here. 

Two of the most well-known local/regional currencies include the Chiemgauer and the Berkshare. The Chiemgauer is used in Prien am Chiemsee, Bavaria, Germany and was introduced in 2003; the Berkshare was introduced in September 2006 in the region of Berkshire, Massachusetts, USA. They are popular with residents of respective regions.

How to detect cervical cancer cheaply

In poor countries, women can't afford a pap smear which requires high-tech and expensive equipment and trained personnel that many clinics in these countries lack. This is why deaths by cervical cancer is higher in poor countries than in countries like America. But have no fear, a cheap solution has come underway. It is already being done in countries such as Thailand, India and Botswana.

Developed by the John Hopkins medical school, the colposcopy involves using a common household item - vinegar - to detect precancerous cells on the cervix. How ingenious is that? In this procedure, all you need is a nurse, some vinegar and some simple equipment. No laboratory tests are required and precancerous cells that are detected can be removed in a subsequent procedure called cryotherapy, all during the same appointment.

So how does it work? Firstly, the vinegar is applied on to the woman's cervix using a swab. The doctor, nurse of midwife then looks for whitish or yellowish spots on the cervix using a colposcope, a lighted binocular microscope. Some may even use a magnifying glass. These white tissues are abnormal cervical tissues and are potentially cancerous lesions that need to be removed. If there are no white or yellow spots then the patient is free from precancerous cells and the appointment is over.

As for the patients with whitish tissue, the health care personnel then carries out cryoptherapy which involves freezing these white tissues with carbon dioxide, nitrogen or nitrous oxide. Then the frozen layer can then be removed. The woman may feel a bit of pain during this procedure. However, this momentary pain is well worth to prevent the development of cervical cancer which can be a painful and undesirable death.

I found this procedure interesting because something as common as acetic acid in vinegar can be used to detect and thus prevent a potentially life-threatening disease. These sort of innovative and inexpensive procedures are what lower income countries need to improve the people's health. I would like to see a decline in the number of deaths from cervical cancer which is about 250,000 annually, of which about 85% are from low or middle-income countries.I think the hardworking health care personnel and the experts who developed this procedure deserve a big thank you from everyone.

Oh no! Chemical weapons...

President Obama has warned Syria - Assad, specifically - against the use of chemical weapons. While the Syrian Foreign Ministry spokesperson has confirmed that they would never use these weapons on its own people. But what about non-Syrians? If there is sufficient aggression from foreign parties, would they really deploy these chemicals? If there should be chemical warfare in Syria itself, then its citizens would undoubtedly be affected. If the chemical agents were delivered outside of Syria, then not only would there be war, but civil rife, political hostility between warring counties and a massive loss of lives. Not to mention another dark chapter in our history books.

Starting a war is one thing, but chemical warfare is one of the most undesirable and abominable forms of war that have devastating effects, especially on bystanders. Let's touch a little bit on the history of chemical warfare. For one thing, it's nothing new. It's been used even during the medieval times. Although they didn't have sarin or agent orange, they could make poison arrows, using natural sources, such as snake and scorpion venom. The ancient Chinese in 200 B.C took it a step further by pumping their chemical agent into the air. Later on, the ancient Greeks used suffocating fumes in the Trojan War. In the 20th century, mustard gas in WW1 and WW2, agent orange in the Vietnam War, nerve agents in the Cold War, etc. The list goes on. We all know the effects of agent orange such as the birth defects and people becoming maimed.

Let's not have another century marred by chemical warfare. Let's hope that all the countries which have chemical weapons to use them wisely and if possible, to never have to use them. Quote President Obama, 'We simply cannot allow the 21st century to be darkened by the worst weapons of the 20th century.'
